Year 13 - Nº 2 / May 2010
In 1984, during a second trip to Walzenhausen with his wife Eva, Sam had the pleasure to meet the legendary Ulrich, founder of Just. Dressed in his immaculate ironed shirt, coat and tie, Ulrich welcomed Sam at the factory that was closed for the weekend. It was on this warm summer Saturday morning that Sam first looked into Ulrich’s gentle blue eyes that harbored the powerful gaze of a quiet and peaceful 81 year old man. Ulrich was already aware of whom Sam was through his son, Ernst Jüstrich, but Sam was just getting to know the man that would serve as his inspiration for years.
Even though Ulrich had a thick German accent, he spoke Spanish quite well and insisted that they communicate only in Spanish not only to make sure Sam felt welcomed, but also because of the appreciation and fond memories he had of his beginnings in Argentina. In a perfect spoken Spanish and welcoming tone, Ulrich pleasantly smiled and asked Sam, “How are you doing?”
He invited Sam to take a walk through the picturesque and typical Swiss town that embodies a unique identity. Walking at his own pace, with his hands typically behind his back, in a calm tone he explained to Sam how important the moral integrity of the company was to him. He explained how he had been retired for a while, yet he found it enjoyable to go to the manufacturing plant every single day. He truly believed it was necessary to motivate employees by greeting them, talking to them about their families and letting them know that the company does care about them individually; after all, he had seen them grow from the very beginning.
After ending the tour of the manufacturing plant, Ulrich and Sam stepped out of the building onto a hill overlooking Lake Constance. The warm reflection of the sun was comforting
and pleasant; it was then that Ulrich enlightened Sam about his memories of economic struggle during the 1930. He explained to
Sam that upon his return to Switzerland the struggle to succeed and make something special for others was so great that it could
not be forgotten now. Ulrich described those times as dreams that no one would have ever thought could result in such wonderful products that brings joy to so many and
that only continues to spread globally.
Ulrich told Sam how important it is to spread insight of natureas a divine gift, of the benefits of his products and what a deep satisfaction it is to provide others with natural wellbeing solutions. In a few simple words, Ulrich told Sam his very powerful notion, that “life is only worth living as long you work towards the well-being of others.”
It was this moment that the true beauty of an intense blue sky, vast mountains, green reflection of the lake, and unfolding wild flowers captured Sam’s heart. Like a missing piece to a puzzle, the simple words of a wise man, that had seen much more than Sam could imagine at the moment, filled Sam’s heart and made a dreamer out of him. Sam now not only saw the company’s potential, but he believed in it. Sam said, “There is something here. I’ve found something new, different. I didn’t know it existed, but it’s what I was looking for.” This gave way to the start of the SwissJust Americas we all know, love and work hard to share with those that surround us.
